AAWA Welcomes Charity Commission Investigation

PRESS RELEASE –

AAWA welcomes Charity Commission investigation of UK congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses

May 30, 2014

Advocates for Awareness of Watchtower Abuses (AAWA) announced that they welcome the decision by the UK Charity Commission to open an operational compliance case into a Manchester-based Jehovah’s Witness congregation following concerns about how it protects vulnerable members.

In late May 2014 the UK Charity Commission said that it was in discussions with the Manchester New Moston Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses after reports in the Manchester Evening News that a congregation member, Jonathan Rose, recently released from prison after serving nine months for the indecent of assault of two girls, was allowed to question his victims in front of congregation elders. The abuse survivors were required to recount the abuse at the judicial committee meeting to have Rose barred from the congregation. [Link to original news account.]

Was this “Undue Influence”?

Contributed by: Raye France

It occurred to me for the first time that the Watchtower might be using undue influence when I heard, “Apostates are not sincere….they are mentally diseased…” That was what the speaker said at the July 5-7, 2013 District Convention in Long Beach, CA.

I wrote a note and passed it to my wife. “ALL apostates are mentally diseased”?

She wrote back, “Generally speaking.”

I nodded and went back to note taking, but a few moments later, it started bothering me.

I asked myself, “How could the Governing Body of the Watchtower Society know the motives of everyone called an apostate?”

The Watchtower and Mental Illness

Being a Jehovah’s Witness is, as they say, “no walk in the park.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses live a very stressful lifestyle. While some find comfort and acceptance within the organization, a growing number realize that they are “living a lie.” They can not possibly live up to the standards the religion sets for them. Their sex lives are restrictive, they can not carry on normal relationships with non-Jehovah’s Witnesses, and they are banned from any contact with former Witnesses – including members of their own families. They have limited options for employment or expanding their education. The Watchtower Society even limits their medical options and choices for professional counseling or treatment.

What is “Undue Influence”?

Undue influence is any act of persuasion that overcomes the free will and judgment of another person. People are unduly influenced by urgent warnings, flattery, trickery, coercion and deception. In a court of law, it is a legal term that involves one person taking advantage of their position of power over another person.

675px-Maslow's_Hierarchy_of_Needs.svgIn a Maslow-like hierarchy of serious threats to a free society and happy families, undue influence goes under the radar for most people. That reality is a sad shame, because in the manipulative hands of charismatic cult leaders, highly controlling religious groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses, human traffickers, multi-level marketers and some political action groups, undue influence is a significant problem in today’s world.

[“Undue Influence” defined.]

When “undue influence” is used to cheat people out of their inheritance or property, deceive them into thinking that extreme shunning of close family members is a loving act, encourage them to break the law, threaten them with shunning if they report child molestation or domestic violence to the police, become involved in shady deals or coerce them into letting their children die because it is God’s will, these kinds of influence destroy lives, break up families and threaten basic human rights – especially for women and children. Even worse, it contributes billions of dollars to people and groups who create no value for society.

Help Pass the New York “Child Victims Act”

New York State Assembly Chamber

New York State Assembly Chamber

PRESS RELEASE –

When you scan recent media headlines, you are likely to see more stories about Jehovah’s Witnesses (both past and present) coming forward with allegations of child molestation. While many of these reports focus on cases that have been successfully prosecuted, there are many more sexual abuse crimes that we never read about and often are not reported.

We know that it is extremely difficult for victims to come forward, particularly within high-control cultures like Jehovah’s Witnesses that discourage victims from reporting their allegations to authorities. Instead, victims and their families find themselves being coerced into having their cases handled internally by church elders. In too many of these situations victims are themselves further threatened if they want to also report their victimization to police or other secular authorities.

Can you be any happier than this?

John Cedars and friends (including a few who are AAWA advisors and volunteers) have put together this light-hearted and joyful video based on the widely popular song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.

Just sit back, turn up the volume, take your monitor to full screen and just enjoy the moment!

How the Watchtower Uses Undue Influence to Enforce Its Blood Policy

Contributed by: Marc Latham

Cora and I have never felt better about a visit to the hospital than we did on Friday, March 28, 2014. It wasn’t a routine health checkup for sure, but rather a presentation that, with Cora’s help, I made at the London Royal Hospital. Actually, it happened right in the center of the Emergency Department within a seminar room. Our audience included attentive groups of doctors, nurses and trauma specialists.

Cora and I were there as representatives for both AAWA and AJWRB (Associated Jehovah’s Witnesses for Reform on Blood). Our objective was to share some much-needed information about the secretive world of the Watchtower Society.

Our First Anniversary: What a year it has been!

Over a year ago, a group of compassionate and caring people began discussing the possibility of setting up a not-for-profit organization that would shine the bright light of truth on the Watchtower Society’s most harmful policies.

Their organization would focus on policies that violate the basic human rights of Jehovah’s Witnesses. They would emphasize the protection of children and women relating to physical and sexual abuse – as well as from other forms of domestic violence.

The April 2014 AAWAke! newsletter is now available to download here
or on our Newsletters page.

That in itself was a lofty goal. But they also decided that they would not overlook the Watchtower’s prohibition on the medical use of blood, their over use of extreme shunning, or their ongoing resistance to post-secondary education for JW children or adults trying to improve their skills and personal income.
